Finally the 3rd edition of the most popular yearly event in a country where there's only a single religion (read cricket) has drawn to an end (on the field i mean). Well when one thought that nothing would surpass cricket for once, the thought process was aborted there itself courtesy the commissioner of IPL(ex-commissioner would be more apt). So all that we would remember of IPL3 a few years down the track would be the art of chopping of your own feet with an axe (kulhadi pe paon marna) demonstrated with ultimate perfection by a lean, dark member of BCCI who had revolutionized the way Indians watch cricket - the one and only, Mr. Lalit Modi.
If we analyze the actual cricketing content in this edition then undoubtedly the level of cricket this year was way way better than the previous 2 editions. The competition for a spot in semis was really intense with 7 teams having a realistic chance to end in the top 4(Kings XI was busy trying hard to retain the last spot n were given some tough competition by KKR in the end, but they emerged as the true contenders of the coveted position...:P). The suspense came to a draw only in the penultimate match of the long league stage and this was what really gripped and hooked the followers till the very end. Awesome performances by known geniuses like Sachin, Kallis, Bollinger, Raina, Malinga, Pragyan Ojha, Uthappa (ya, ya evn dada)n emergence of new players like Saurabh Tiwary, Naman Ojha, Murali Vijay, Pollard made sure the supporters had something to cheer about.
Some spectacular innings deserve a special mention. Murali vijay's 120 against rajasthan was stunning due to its pace. Yusuf Pathan's century against mumbai due to its sheer brutality. Sachin's 89 vs rajasthan for the magnificient set up of the hole innings. Dhoni's match winning 54 against KXIP which changed the whole tournament. And many more. Overall the cricket content made IPL3 a really successful event.
But then came Mr. Modi alongwith a really potential weapon (of self destruction), i.e, his tweets (who follows them btw??). When everything seemed to be smooth sailing his single tweet against another very twitter friendly personality (no points for guessing), Mr. Shashi Tharoor started the chaos that has been assuming the shape of a tornado in Indian politics as well as sporting scenes off late.
And finally it has cost both Modi n Tharoor quite dearly. Tharoor has had to resign from his post of Minister of state for external affairs and has been sent to Kerela to revive congress(lol....the reasons these parties come up wid to avoid embarrassment....perhaps a need for ayurvedic massages would have been a better reason...:P). On the other hand Mr. Modi amongst his constant blabbering in media has been suspended as the IPL commissioner and been replaced by Chirayu Amin (didn't Modi ask for it himself?? seems he wants to go for an ayurvedic holiday too...:D).
And trust me all of this could have been completely avoided if Modi hadn't tweeted that single controversial statement. But this is what is destiny my friends (n also people hav got a story to gossip bout before the T20 world cup begins).
Well I have come up with a few expansions for IPL in the light of the current fiasco. "Itna Paisa League, "Ignorant Public League","Insulted n Pissed off Lalit". Would luv to c u ppl add on to the list n thn may b we can recommend it to BCCI...:P.
Hope there is an IPL4 and we get to c at least the good quality cricket that the sportsmen on the field promise. N hope there is a bit more transparency in the proceedings this time....lets c what Mr. Amin has to show now. But one thing is for sure.....the show must go on!!!
